My wife braided my hair yesterday for the first time....
Although this seems like a simple thing, most will not notice that a few years ago as I started getting into ministry I felt like I had to change myself and negate my culture - or water it down because of social norms in modern church communities. I remember growing up and always wanting not so much just the cornrows because of people like Allen Iverson or countless rappers, but also friends, etc in my school/ neighborhood. My mom would cornrow my younger sister’s hair just about every week (probably why she has such a big forehead!- Just Kidding!) At the time I would rock the Caesar cut and had every color du-rag of the Crayola box in order to match my outfits. I never actually grew out my curls until high school. One of those younger desires was to be in a relationship where my girl would do my hair for me as it was something that in my community was a sign of connection and intimacy(sometimes for the wrong reasons, but a symbol in our culture none the less) In church circles I would see people with these sorts of hair cuts either looked down upon, and call “stupid-rags” to the things worn upon our heads(meanwhile it was something in my home by my father I was told to wear to bed every night in order to keep my hair neat. I would actually get in trouble for not wearing it at home) - Yet now it was something for me to get in trouble for wearing outside the home from school administration, etc. I posted on my insta-story yesterday and held a survey to see the response of the people. First off thanks to my amazing wife for this is something she has known how to do since a kid and share that level of intimacy from a marriage standpoint. Second I just want to pray for the day where we feel so comfortable in how God has formed us in our lives through all of our experiences that we would embrace all of it and bring it to him regardless of how we look, dress, or have been inspired by him to be a symbol of Christ in our world today so as long as it brings Him all do the glory. - The Symbol - All is Love

- The Symbol - All is Love IMAGES from yesterday taken by @earthlylynx of an event where I was able to offer some inspiration and motivation to the young men of Pelham Prep. Honestly, bring there was big for me (though I had to be real serious and stern with them) because this group is very much like me - minority males from the Bronx who society looks down on and doesn’t expect much from. I pray something from the day resonates with them as they are able to grow and not only prove society wrong, but rise to respond to the very unique purpose that was intended for each of them uniquely in this world. I am grateful to the Principal, Assistant Principal and school staff for starting this years ago, and allowing me to be a part of it this year. Also, a big shout out to Jonathan Berenguer & Jamar Clarke for the collaboration in making this day a success ! - The Symbol
